Despite the slew of parties and events to choose from in New York during Armory show weekend, the opening party for Hope Atherton’s solo exhibition at Bortolami Gallery in Chelsea on Saturday night drew a large crowd. The show, which consists of moody, large oil paintings of landscape and still- life, runs from March 29 – May 2.

This is Atherton’s second solo show at Bortolami. Her work, which has been described as “mystical surrealism” skirts the line between representation and abstraction. Her use of light creates dreamlike canvases for the viewer to enter, and casts even McDonald’s signs and Sunset Strip billboards with a near-spiritual glow.

A graduate of RISD, Hope Atherton was born on a farm in Warrenton, Virginia in 1974, and lives and works in New York City. The opening was attended by friends and family.
