Was Dave Hickey there? He had already imagined it:

My exclusion from such intimate occasions—some imaginary, many all too real—makes me feel diminished, and it’s supposed to. Ideally, everyone at an art fair ends up feeling diminished. It’s rough out there on the floor. Talent, status, ambition, and greed duke it out. Nobody knows who’s winning because the ground is always shifting.

The boys and girls at the top of the art world forgot for a moment that all of our great expectations for new money and new talent are bound up with Magwitch, making his fortune in Australia, and young Pip down in the mosh pit. Then, simultaneously, they all remembered.

All around me: the art sissies and fashion trash who make art parties infinitely preferable to dinner at the home of the dean of fine arts.
