Peter Fischli and David Weiss address their own curatorial authority with a piece titled There’s nothing to see here – we’re still setting up, an unlit stack of five polyurethane cubes and planks. It is important to note that Fischli and Weiss have not defined the exhibition as “curated,” but “arranged,” instead focusing on the lack of authority for Sculpture Now.

Thematically, Sculpture Now emphasizes the architectural and technical. The lineage of primitive art, Marcel Duchamp, and minimalism inspires systematized mixed media.  From the architectural coordinates of Liam Gillick to readymade objects of beauty by Sylvie Fleury, the overarching message is one of an ever-changing albeit planned reality.

Appropriation and reinvention consistently dictate Sculpture Now. Noted works include Mark Handforth’s Coathanger (2011), in which the seemingly everyday object is purposefully shaped, and Maria Eichhorn’s Tüten mit Schachteln (Bags with Packets). Eichhorn’s work, described by the galerie as an “art operating system,” collects miscellaneous packets in two big bags.

Sculpture Now is additionally relevant on a commercial level. Ultimately, Sculpture Now addresses the contemporary moment, dually with respect to historical and aesthetic levels.
