Crewdson is a contemporary photographer who typically works with digital C-prints, capturing highly detailed scenes that are usually carefully staged. He pays close attention to depth, texture and color, working with a vast palette. More often than not, his work has an eerie and unsettling quality. He uses techniques used to produce cinematic productions, including complex lighting, expansive sets, made-up actors, etc.

Many of his pieces, like Untitled Summer 2004 which poses juxtaposes a young boy standing outside a trailer facing a nude woman standing in a trailer’s door, use posed people and mannequins to elicit emotion and add a human element to his work. Such inclusion of oddly-placed nudes is not uncommon within his work. His famous 2001 piece Untitled places a pale corpse dressed in a white gown lying on a living room floor, floating in a few inches of dark water.

In 2004, he received the Skowhegan Medal for Photography. His photographs are included in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, Tokyo’s Museum of Contemporary Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Boston Museum of Fine Art as well as several other international museums.
