His second exhibition at Simon Lee Gallery, Michelangelo Pistoletto uses a process-as-product aesthetic to address themes of production, labor, and inevitably, deconstruction. The exhibition, titled Lavoro (Italian for to work or to operate), displays objects of construction as a means of revealing the art inherent to the tools that produce it, revisiting the artist’s fascination with ideas of assembly and process, and the socio-political implications thereof.

Michelangelo Pistoletto, Lavoro – betoniera (2008-2011)

A cement truck, frozen in time, takes on new life as a symbol of emergence and determination through economic hardship; a pile of tires lay dormant, as the negative space around them is permeated and, by virtue of that, creates a sense of hope and wonder regarding man’s power to create and destroy.

Pistoletto began painting in 1962 and has made a career displaying the art of impoverished objects. His signature mirror paintings were a pioneering effort in his early work and still remain a large part of his repertoire. In this latest exhibition, images of mechanization—cranes, ladders, tires—are silkscreened in a juxtaposition of textures against the stainless steel of the mirror.ui
