Karen Kilimnick is showing at the Brant Foundation in Greenwich, Connecticut. The opening event occurred this Sunday with a preview by founder Peter Brant and a list of other art world notables such as Jeffrey Deitch, Gavin Brown, Julian Schnabel and May Anderson, John McEnroe, Dan Colen, Nate Lowman, Hanna Liden, Elias Hanson, Rikrit Tiravanija, and Elizabeth Peyton amongst other collectors and members of the press. Backing up to the expansive Greenwich Polo Grounds, the event mostly took place outdoors, under and around a tented table area where visitors snacked on steak frites and lamb roasted within view.

Inside the converted stone barn, a two story universe was unfolded by Kilimnick. Working in a variety of mediums, the first room features early work; drawings of fashionable looking women with bits of text scratched into the margins (dates and times, cities, clothing labels) that are at turns playful and lonely. Further into the exhibit newer, site-specific commissioned pieces and installations took residence: a shopping bag and perfume strewn miniature Versailles; a war-time tent rendered innocent by its slightly insufficient size and toy-like contents; two altars dedicated to Baroque-era symbolism and an alternate “altar” where art and photographic culture had come crashing down in a pile of broken chandeliers, empty frames and xeroxes. Kilimnick’s show at the Brant Foundation is a head space all its own.

The show will run through September and is open to the public by appointment.
