The newly completed redesign of the Serpentine Sackler Gallery is set to open this Sunday in London’s Kensington Gardens neighborhood, featuring a sloping new design extension by architect Zaha Hadid, which complements a freshly renovated gunpowder store initially constructed in 1805.

Situated across the park from the original Serpentine Gallery, the Sackler is anticipated to provide a complementary exhibition galleries for the institution, adding almost 10,000 square feet of space that “will realize the adage that one plus one equals 11.” According to director Hans Ulrich Obrist.

Titled “The Magazine,” the space will house the gallery’s restaurant, as well as a “public social space,” creating an expansive art campus for The Serpentine on the Kensington Gardens grounds, contrasting classic British design with Hadid’s new building. “This takes me back to how I began my career deciding how to respond to an historic context.” Hadid said.
