New works by Luc Tuymans will be exhibited in the upcoming show, “Forever: The Management of Magic”, at David Zwirner gallery. The influential Belgian artist has produced sixteen new works specifically for the show. The included works all deal with the hopelessly pervasive, and specifically American, Walt Disney phenomenon.

Tuymans’ paintings and drawings rely heavily on found visual materials. The works address Disney as a means of entertainment that shifted to an ideology. However, in Tuymans’ work the utopian ideal of happiness that the Disney brand tries to produce is delicately deconstructed. Images of EPCOT, the Carousel of Progress, and the Light Parade all seem to dissipate in front of the viewer. This aesthetic references both the dissolution of this attempt at utopia and the nature of memory, and illustrates the collective effect that Disney has had on the memories of the American masses.

Tuymans’ work will be on view from February 14 through March 22 at David Zwirner Gallery located at 525 West 19th Street New York, NY.
