London’s Serpentine Gallery, located in Hyde Park’s Kensington Gardens, literally received a new twist thanks to the joint efforts of artist Ólafur ElÃasson and architect Kjetil Thorsen. Together, the duo designed the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion, a wooden “spinning-top” that will offer guests views across Kensington Gardens.
The outside of the structure was constructed using plywood while other sections of the edifice will feature fir and spruce. A dark wood finish will complement the timber that was used to erect the spiral ramp. Serpentine’s wooden pavilion is set to open in August and will run through November.
Danish-born Eliasson is best known in London for his 2003 work “The Weather Project” which ran at the Tate Modern. – Andrew Eisen
