The outspoken, political, and seemingly controversial artist, Joseph Beuys, was a member of the international Fluxus movement and was widely recognized among the art world during his career. During his lifetime he represented Germany of the Venice Biennale in 1976 and again in 1980, and was also honored with a retrospective at the Guggenheim New York in 1979.

The Moment explains, “Tributing John Milius’s 1973 film ‘Dillinger’ with a quick-and-dirty conceptual remake, Beuys’s poster allows the artist’s obligatory mythmaking to displace the actor Warren Oates and crib the film’s original tag line: ‘He was the gangster’s gangster.’ Even when flattened and hung on a wall, Beuys’s charismatic agenda continues to outfox, seduce and refocus the art of his storytelling.â€
