In case you missed Damien Hirst at last month’s Contemporary Art auctions (just one painting made it to an evening sale), there is still time to see eighteen of the artist’s Medicine Cabinets installed at L&M Arts in New York. The cabinets are exhibited along with a collection of Sex Pistols memorabilia that includes posters, prints, and t-shirts.

The medicine cabinets range in date from 1988 – when Hirst was a 23 year old art student – to 1997 – the year the Sensation exhibition opened at the Royal Academy in London. They include the first two cabinets Hirst ever made – Sinner and Enemy. Each shelf contains dozens of bottles and boxes of medication and, in the case of Sinner, some of these prescriptions are from Hirst’s deceased grandmother’s personal medicine cabinet.

Twelve of the cabinets, created in 1989, take their titles from the twelve tracks on the Sex Pistols’ 1977 album “Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols.”  Also on view are a later set of four larger cabinets simply titled Sex Pistols that are being exhibited publicly for the first time.

The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue jointly published by L&M and Hirst’s own publishing company, Other Criteria. Art critic Arthur Danto, author James Frey, and former Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones have made contributions to the volume. Also included is a catalogue raisonné of about one hundred medicine cabinets Hirst produced between 1988 and 2008.
