Currently at Regen Projects are new color field photographs by Los Angeles based artist, Walead Beshty.  This marks Beshty’s first show at Regen Projects, and it transitions between themes of history, formality and structure.  The gallery is dense with Beshty’s large-scale photographs, which speak to photographic process and its potential to present as sculpture,  environment and painterly object.

Beshty’s photograms, which make up the largest percentage of the show, are made from photos developed in a darkroom using very particular environmental factors, after which they are shredded, mulched,  reconstituted, hybridized and framed. The photos are abstract explorations of process and design.

Also featured are his “Copper Surrogates,” alluring and delicate copper plates, which in their original state were polished copper tabletops used as workspaces during the artist’s process. Bringing them up to the wall raises distinct questions of work and display, the art object and art tool.
