The design for the 2019 edition of the Serpentine Pavilion has been announced, with Japanese designer Junya Ishigami tapped to execute a light, illusory design appearing as if it was quite hefty and overpowering. “Possessing the weighty presence of slate roofs seen around the world, and simultaneously appearing so light it could blow away in the breeze, the cluster of scattered rock levitates, like a billowing piece of fabric,” his firm said in a statement.

Previously an employee at SANAA, the 44-year old architect was awarded the prestigious Golden Lion at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2010, embracing a similar approach to lightweight appearances and subtle inversions of material logic.  He has realized similar exercises on his designs for the Kanagawa Institute of Technology Workshop in Japan and the House of Peace in Copenhagen.

The Serpentine Pavilion will open June 20th, and will serve as a home for various talks, screenings, and other programming for the museum.
