Daniel Buren & Philippe Parreno, Simultanément, travaux in situ et en mouvement (Installation view), Galerie Kamel Mennour
Choosing an auspicious concept for the first show in its new space in Paris’s rue du Pont de Lodi, Kamel Mennour Gallery presents a joint project between two artists of different generations yet similar interests in space and exhibition, presentation and perception. Unifying the visions of Daniel Buren and Philippe Parreno’s Simultanément, travaux in situ et en mouvement brings together the pair’s intriguing interests in the definition and understanding of space and movement.

Finding a shared ground between the two artists, the show unifies their works across the expanse of the new space, which the gallery has allowed to remain in a relatively raw state. The artists’ works sprawl throughout the building, emphasizing scale and size while allowing their subtle inversions to conjure shifting understandings of the viewer’s place in the building. In one hallway, a string of colored sheets throw bands of color across the room, while architectural pieces by Parreno twist the light and line of sight of viewers as they move through the space. It’s a fitting first show at the gallery, a physical celebration of its architecture and possibilities through the delicate interactions and interjections of the two artists showing within it.

Entering into collaboration with the gallery’s interior designer Pierre Yovanovitch, the artists drew as well on the long-term visions for the gallery, using fluorescent lighting to subvert exterior time and equally emphasize the sense of space to be. As Parreno notes in the gallery press materials: ‘the space opens and closes to the rhythm of a form that is also trying to exist, to appear within a gaze, to manifest itself. A space undergoing the time of its own unveiling. A stochastic space, one given up to chance, made up of glimmers and events. Everything is breath and movement in this place that is never really a place since it is endlessly forming and deforming itself.”
The show closes February 27th.
