And what’s on preview during Frieze at the gallery?
Su Yu-Xin’s upcoming exhibition and publication, ‘Precious,’ explores geopolitical narratives through a geological approach to landscape painting. The artist collects, studies, and processes natural materials and pigments she sources from remote regions. Her works could be considered monuments to the suffering of Asian immigrants and Taiwanese indigenous peoples, who migrated and labored in the global colonial past, yet they are also the products of humanity’s desires to transform the natural world after the Industrial Revolution. The sublime landscapes evoke a nostalgic reminder of the artist’s own migration and family history.
Which contemporary artists or curators are currently inspiring you, and how do they influence your vision for years to come at the gallery?
I am always excited about the next artist I am about to exhibit. We will be presenting James Capper, Su Yu-Xin, and Timur Si-Qin this fall. Select curators I admire include Anders Kold, Philip Tinari, and Alexandra Munroe among others. For my generation of curators, Kami Gahiga is pioneering something truly borderless. We might collaborate on a project in the future.
