Brazil played a key role at the 27th Madrid International Contemporary Art Fair. Held February 13th through the 18 2008th in Feria de Madrid, ARC08 united 295 galleries from 34 countries, with strong presence from leading art markets including New York, London, and Germany, at the largest contemporary art fair in Europe.

ARCO8’s increasing success [ArtDaily]Latin American Galleries and Artists’ strong presence served as testament to the region’s increasingly important role in the international art market. Curators Moacir dos Anjos and Paulo Sérgio Duarte’s efforts to incorporate the work of established and up-and-coming Brazilians did not go unnoticed.Selected Brazilian contributors of note included electronic artist Eduardo Kac, video artists Rosângela Rennó, Mariana Manhães and Leonora de Barros, as well as photographer Cao Guimarães, graphic artist Fabiano Gonder, and painter Rodrigo Andrade.
Photography was especially profitable in sales at ARC07, and this trend only heightened in 2008. In recent years, global price indexes for photography have greatly surpassed the prices paid for sculpture and paintings, with photographs increasingly surpassing the million dollar mark at auction. Notable photographers represented at ARC08 included German School representation by Andreas Gursky, Thomas Ruff, and Candida Höfer, as well as American photographers Nan Goldin, David Armstrong, and David LaChapelle and Japanese Nobuyoshi Araki.
