In a recent public appearance, Ai Weiwei called China “the greatest challenge the West has ever faced,” referring in particular to the current political state of Hong Kong and its relationship to mainland China.  “This is not just a struggle between Hong Kong and China. It is a struggle between freedom and a sectarian state. Hong Kong represents a value we should all protect,†he says.
