Team Gallery in New York is currently showing der osten im norden des westens (which translates as ‘the north of the east of the west’) by Gert and Uwe Tobias. The title eludes to the unique provenance of the twin brothers -born in 1973 in Transylvania but currently based in Germany- who effortlessly blend Russian constructivism, Bauhaus architectural references, a strong historical sense and a dash of whimsy in their colorful, graphic work. This is their first exhibition in a New York gallery.

This show is made up of large woodcuts, wall paintings, and smaller drawings. They use color, shape, and text to produce abstractions that can be mysterious, familiar, scary, and fun. The placement within the gallery has been thoroughly considered, with the intention to create a space that “excites curiosity while always retaining a persuasive accessibility.”

A strong sense of where they are from and who they are is crucial to the Tobias’s work, all of which is made collaboratively. The brothers think of themselves almost as one artist, cosigning all of their work regardless of who made which piece.
