The director of Tate Liverpool Christoph Grunenbergin is quoted as saying: “It’s going to be our most important show ever. We are expecting at least 100,000 visitors. We are very lucky because Klimt’s star is rising again. This icon of 20th century art is popular again with his warm colours, his very rich golden paintings and the fascination he has for young artists.”

The artist, born in Austria in 1862, founded the Viennese Secession in 1897, and gathered a progressive group of artists and artisans at that time. Klimt’s paintings are generally very intricate and colored; and gold is a frequently present element. For this exhibition, the Tate re-created rooms in the style of architect Josef Hoffmann, who was contemporary and a friend of Klimt’s.

Klimt’s later work became more mature with topics such as sex, mortality and ostentation. The show does not include all Klimt’s paintings, but is nevertheless the most important show of the artist yet shown in the U.K.. Klimt is currently one of the most valuable painters in the world, the painting Adele Bloch-Bauer I was sold for a record $135 million in 2006.
