Wiley, a contemporary portrait-painter, often captures representations of young, urban, black men. His style has been depicted as realistic while reverent to old masters of painting.
His portraits are based on photographs taken of subjects who he sees on the street and subsequently asks to pose in Renaissance positions. Beginning with young men from Harlem’s 125th Street, his subjects now include those from South Central Los Angeles, where he was born.
He has exhibited at New York’s Deitch Projects, Chicago’s Rhona Hoffman Gallery and Roberts and Tilton in Los Angeles. His work is included in the collections of the Denver Art Museum, The Columbus Museum of Art, The Brooklyn Museum, the Kansas City Museum, The Oak Park Public Library, The Studio Museum in Harlem, The Walker Art Center and the Virginia Museum of Fine Art.
