Jeff Koons, an art world celebrity since the 1980’s for his stainless steel pop-art renderings of everyday, vernacular objects–and notorious for his marriage to porn star/legislator La Cicciolina–is currently on exhibit in the royal apartments and gardens of Versailles palace, west of Paris. The show, which was organized by French billionaire collector (and owner of Christie’s) Francois Pinault, will feature 17 pieces from the corpus of the man who is arguably the biggest-selling living artist, including well known works such as Rabbit, Lobster, Large Vase of Flowers and Split Rocker

The exhibition is not without controversy. The exhbition has been protested both in the press and at the site from its very opening. Many are up in arms about displaying American modern contemporary art in such a revered, historical space such as Versailles, a quintessentially French national and cultural symbol. Furthermore, accusations of conflict of interest have been thrown at Pinault, who owns many of the works on display and who some critics allege is staging the show to increase the value of his Koons collection for a potential sale. Those same critics have also pointed out that Pinault formerly employed the current Chairman of the Versailles Trust as the head of his own private collection, based in Venice.
