On view now at Gagosian Gallery’s Davies Street location in London is an exhibition of the work of Richard Wright, one of four artists shortlisted for this year’s Turner Prize. The highlight of the show is a site-specific painting on the ceiling made with silver leaf. Many of Wright’s works are created in situ, responding to  the architectural layout, often working with overlooked places, with the overall design of the work evolving until its completion. The exhibition also includes a number of works on paper.

Wright’s works on paper are elaborate overlays of gold leaf, creating complex, kaleidoscopic images out of a jumble of vocabularies. Drawing from diverse lexicons such as Medieval painting, typography, and graphic design, the works often have a quite delicate and subtle effect, in contrast to the richness of the design. In addition to the works done in gold leaf, there are a number of tinted works on paper that build upon kaleidoscope imagery.

Richard Wright was born in London in 1960 and moved to Scotland at a young age, and continues to live and work in Glasgow. Many of his commissioned in situ works are on display permanently at institutions including the Museum of Moderrn Art in New York, the Jumex Foundation in Mexico City, and Telenor in Oslo. He has had solo exhibitions at the Tate Gallery in Liverpool, Kunsthalle Bern, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego, among others.  He has recently exhibited in the 55th Carnegie International in Pittsburgh and the Ingleby Gallery in Glasgow. The exhibition at Gagosian, which runs September 1 to October 3, 2009, precedes the Turner Prize exhibition at Tate Britain, which is on view October 6, 2009 through January 3, 2010.  The Turner Prize winner will be announced on December 7, 2009.
