The current works continue the nature of Richter’s artistic production especially found in recent series of abstract works such as the Silicate Paintings of 2003 and  the Cage paintings of 2006 which were conceived as a single group first displayed in 2007 at the 52nd Venice Biennale curated by Rob Storr. The artist readily employs the elements of texture, structure and gesture in his abstract paintings which endows them with technical yet expressionistic qualities.

According to Jerry Saltz, the new works are among “the most majestic, haunting, voluptuous, and vulnerable of his career.” Richter’s paintings take on a physical quality with their overlays of contrasting color and thick applications of wet-on-wet paint. They are at once complex and simple as well which makes it near impossible to grasp the secret to his technique.

A series of paintings entitled 911 are abstract and cold. Painted in light pale colors they evoke a feelings of sadness and loss in order to recall an inescapable moment of collective tragedy.
