After selling out in 2023, Frieze returns to The Shed in Manhattan for the 2024 installment of their annual Art Fair, spanning May 1 – 5, 2024. Bringing together the world’s leading galleries to showcase ambitious solo, group and themed presentations by pioneering artists, Frieze NY offers the opportunity to not only discover up-and-coming talent, but to also engage with the who’s who of the art world.

Staples of the fair include 303 Gallery, Miguel Abreu Gallery, Tanya Bonakdar Gallery, Canada, Chapter NY, Gagosian, Gladstone Gallery, Hauser & Wirth, Casey Kaplan, Karma, Andrew Kreps Gallery, Matthew Marks Gallery, Ortuzar Projects, Pace Gallery and David Zwirner – strongly representing themselves as New York’s crème de la crème. Notable international galleries also include Fortes D’Aloia & Gabriel, Xavier Hufkens, Gallery Hyundai, Kurimanzutto, Massimodecarlo, Victoria Miro, Silverlens, Sprüth Magers and Stevenson. 

Featured in Frieze’s Focus section are solo shows by 11 young exhibitors highlighting emerging or under-appreciated artists. Overseen by the Curatorial Director of Luna Luna, Lumi Tan, Focus welcomes back Matthew Brown, Capsule Shanghai, Company Gallery, Cooper Cole, Mitre Galeria, Gordon Robichaux and Tif Sigfrids, as well as debuts four newcomers, Central Galeria, Kapp Kapp, Madragoa and Patron. The Focus, this year sponsored by Stone Island, is dedicated to enabling the participation of galleries in the fair and ensures that it remains a place to discover new talent.

Must-see shows of prominent fair exhibitors include:

Hauser & Wirth started out strong with sales on the first night, displaying pieces by Nicolas Party, Angel Otero, Rita Ackermann, and more. H&W also featured a special fundraising edition by Thomas J Price which was part of a collaborative commission with V&A East.

Perrotin is participating this year with an impressive solo exhibition by Lee Bae, a significant artist of the Korean contemporary art scene whose chosen material is charcoal that has been created by burning wood and used to revive fire. Alongside his show are other artists represented by the gallery who have concurrent and upcoming exhibitions throughout the US.

Gagosian presents a span of exciting new works by Sterling Ruby. The booth includes four large-scale paintings from the TURBINE series (2021-), as well as a curated collection of collages from Sterling’s DRIFTRS (2012-). Paired together, these two series are visually striking as they explore themes of destruction and macrocosmic imagery.

For this year’s edition of Frieze NY, David Zwirner is exhibiting a dual show of Nate Lowman and Franz West. The booth includes a collection of West’s sculptures and furniture alongside a broader range of Lowman’s works. Both artists are known for their playfulness and humor, as well as their radical approaches to formality, making David Zwirner’s show a breath of whimsical fresh air. (Image above.)

Lastly, 303 Gallery presents a wide array of their represented artists, including Doug Aitken, Nina Canell, Sue Williams, Rodney Graham, Cassi Namoda, and many more.

International standouts at the fair include A Gentil Carioca, who are based in Brazil, and Gallery Hyundai from Korea. The former featured a beautiful dialogue between artists Laura Lima, Vivian Caccuri, and Ana Silva who all work primarily with fiber and textile arts. Similarly, Gallery Hyundai showcased over forty “non-sculpture” works by Seung-taek Lee, embracing a diverse display of alternative mediums.

In regards to the Focus group, Central Galeria’s debut at Frieze introduced us to Carmézia Emiliano, an indigenous artist of the Macuxi ethnicity. Her solo show of thirteen unpublished paintings (as of the beginning of the fair) serves to represent indigenous peoples and culture through not only traditional subject matters, but also through her painting style. Her focus on food, nature, sociability, and religion echo themes of abundance and iconography that contradict the consistent erasure of indigenous culture both in her home country of Brazil and across the globe.

At Gordon Robichaux, Reverend Joyce McDonald’s solo exhibition ‘Beauty in the Midst’  is equally powerful as well as triumphant. A self-taught artist, activist, and minister, she tells the story of her life through “testimonial sculptures” – testimonials of love, loss, family, illness, healing and transformation that enshrine the human experience. Reverend Joyce McDonald was filmed as a feature by Frieze to discuss her life and work that will be published later this week; her video is part of a greater series by Frieze that interviews highlighted artists of Focus, including Stanley Stellar who is represented by another first-timer, Kapp Kapp.

As of Thursday May 2, 2024, Frieze NY is open to the public and tickets are almost sold out entirely.
