German artist Wolfgang Tillmans continues his practice of large-scale photography at his sixth solo exhibition at Regen Projects. These new works are large-scale, compelling photographs of places in cities intimate to the artist. Cities like New York, Berlin and and London, as well as other less familiar locations, make lively subjects for an artist known for his discerning photographic eye. The photographs are large inkjet prints hung without frames, allowing for a minimal exhibition style that showcases both the work and the medium.

For two decades, Tillmans has been known to push the limits of photography. Using abstraction, stunning composition and figuration, Tillmans is able to capture a moment that seems both static and active. Here, continuing his search for clarity and meaning within images, he implores the viewer to do so as well. In this show, he explores shape, technology and pattern in a manner exaggerated by the scale of the image.

Tillmans embraces an exploration of technology, but seems to try to utilize it while avoiding overweighing the subject matter itself. He manages to locate moments within cityscapes in which urban images appear organic. In studying these moments, the artist attempts to allow the viewer to understand the line between technology and nature, nature and experience.
