NEA Announced First Round of 2023 Grants

The NEA announced its latest string of grant recipients this week, with $35.6 million earmarked for a range of projects that “demonstrate the vitality of the humanities across our nation” according to Shelly C. Lowe, the endowment’s chairwoman, and “support humanities programs and opportunities for underserved students and communities.”

Curator Bernice Rose Has Died at the Age of 87

Bernice Rose, an art historian and MoMA curator who was a vocal champion of drawing, and helped its establish its current role in arts study, has died at the age of 87. “She recognized early that for a generation of artists who emerged in the 1960s, the art of drawing knew no boundaries,” says Christophe Cherix, the museum’s chief curator of drawings and prints.

Edward Burtynsky OC is a Canadian photographer and artist. Born of Ukrainian hertiage in 1955 in St. Catharines, Ontario, he studied at the Ryerson Polytechnic Institute, where he graduated from the Photographic Arts / Media Studies program with a Bachelor of Applied Arts, and at Niagara College, where he obtained a diploma in graphic arts. His works are housed in over fifty museums worldwide, numerous corporate collections, and books.

The grand, awe-inspiring beauty of his images is often in tension with the compromised environments they depict. Burtynsky is also the recipient of three honorary doctorates, and the esteemed TED prize. Burtynsky currently chairs the board of directors of the high profile online sustainability magazine Worldchanging, and sits on the board of CONTACT, Toronto’s international festival of photography.
