From February 29 until April 13, the State Hermitage Museum in St.Petersburg presents the Chuck Close’s most recent series of portraits, created between 2005 and 2007. The show has been organized jointly with the London-based gallery White Cube.

“Bill Clinton” via the The State Hermitage Museum
The art works are the faces of Close’s family members, as well as a portrait of the former US president Bill Clinton and Close’s family friend. The show is called “Chuck Close: Seven Portraits”. Chuck Close’s works are neither paintings nor photos.  

Over several months, Close translates a photograph into a painting in a pixelwise manner, using various techniques. Among thousands of faces, the artist chooses the ones that are interesting to him artistically. After a stroke that left him handicapped in 1988, Close started paintings with brush tied down to his hand. It takes him about two years to create a series of works.
