Andrew Kuo, 100% (9/25/2016) (2016), via Art Observed

Andrew Kuo’s work functions at an intersection of the cognitive and formal.  His paintings, jagged and winding swirls of color executed in meticulously arranged grids, draw on histories of formally precise, minimalist painting from across the 20th century.  Yet at the same time, his work twists these forms through a framework of subjectivity, using corresponding texts at the bottom of his paintings to turn them into charts and datasets of sorts.  The amount of time dwelling on various subjects, personal details or grand metaphysical questions are implied through his works, often tinged with a wry sense of humor.

Everybody loves pizza, but the Marlborough Broome Street Gallery loves it even more. With PIZZA TIME!, the new downtown project space from one of New York’s most recognized galleries gives a multimedia homage to the pizza pie.  Supervised by Marlborough Director Pierre Levai’s young son Max, the show signals another step forward for a gallery in the midst of reinventing itself, signing new talent like Rashaad Newsome and duo Jonah Freeman and Justin Lowe, and pursuing new ground for the storied institution.

Andrew Kuo, The Walk Home After Being Racially Slurred/I’m Not Tall, Dark or Handsome, 2011. Via Taxter & Spengemann.

New York City-based artist Andrew Kuo is presenting his second solo show, My List of Demands, at Taxter & Spengemann through April 30th. Kuo meticulously tracks events in his life on digitally-produced charts, including rational and emotional insights on his milieu or on the music he listens to. The richness of the color palette on these charts, as well as the highly stylized use of lines and shapes, and the ludic quality of the variables reflect the artist’s concern on creating beautiful and empathetic representations of messy and conflicted life experiences; enclosing either a gesture, an incident, or a temporal subject (e.g. a musical piece) in a tight, quantifiable, bi-dimensional object.
