Back in 2003 in Frieze’s first year, no major international art fair had ever been hosted in London before. Frieze Art Fair, organized by Matthew Slotover and Amanda Sharp, has helped take London from being a city without a focused art scene to its current state at the center of the European art market. Now in its tenth year, Frieze Art Fair in London’s Regent’s Park has seen around 60,000 visitors, with 264 dealers from 35 countries hoping to sell work (valuing an estimated  £230m) created by more than 2,400 artists within 175 of the world’s leading galleries.

Glasgow-born artist Susan Philipsz has won the £25,000 Turner Prize last night at a ceremony at Tate Britain for her work in sound installation. The artist beat other Turner Prize nominees Dexter Dalwood, Angela de la Cruz, and The Otolith Group for the prestigious prize. Philipsz, 45, was the fourth woman ever to win prize and the first artist to win the modern art prize for sound installation. The artist said she was “very honored” as she received the award from fashion designer/arts patron Miuccia Prada.

On October 5, Tate Britain unveiled its Finalist Exhibition for the 2010 Turner Prize. Painter Dexter Dalwood, installation artist and painter Angela de la Cruz, sound artist Susan Philipsz, and film collaborative Otolith (comprised of Anjalika Sagar and Kodwo Eshun) represent the shortlist for the coveted annual award. The winner selected from among this group will be announced at the museum on December 6, 2010.
