James Turrell Holding $5,000 per Ticket Fundraiser for Roden Crater

James Turrell is reportedly holding a fundraiser event at his remote Roden Crater land art project in Arizona, a private opportunity to tour the crater before it is complete that will cost $5,000 to $6,500 per ticket.   (more…)

NY Times Profiles Iraqi Artist’s Search for Safety to Paint

Artist Bassim al-Shaker, who was included as part of the Iraqi Pavilion at this year’s Venice Biennale, is profiled in the New York Times this week, detailing the artist’s story of oppression at the hands of Mahdi Army loyalists, and his life in Arizona, where he is currently working on a business visa to avoid several fundamentalists who nearly killed him earlier this year.  “He’s obviously very talented,” Says Rijn Sahakian an Iraqi expat representing the country’s artists abroad, “but we were also focused on saving his life.” (more…)

In anticipation of his major, three-museum retrospective beginning next month in New York, Los Angeles and Houston, artist James Turrell is exhibiting a selection of mocels, photographs and designs from his ongoing Roden Crater Project at PACE Gallery’s 57th Street location.  Offering a complex portrait of the artist’s ambitious creative site, the show presents a look at Roden Crater as Turrell moves into the next stage of its construction.
