Statue Breaks World Record for Highest Sale of Ancient Egyptian Art

A 30-inch statue representing the god Sekhemka broke the world record for highest auction price of an Egyptian artwork last Thursday at Christie’s London. The statue, sold by the Northampton Museum and Art Gallery, was estimated to sell for $7 to $11 million, but sold for over double its estimate, going to an anonymous bidder for $27 million. The museum has drawn criticism over the decision to sell the statue to fund a future expansion. “No other items from the museum’s collection will be sold off. “Sekhemka was an exceptional case,” said David Mackintosh of the Northampton Borough Council.

MoMA to Open Björk Retrospective

MoMA has announced an upcoming career retrospective for Björk, spanning the artist’s work across a broad expanse of fields including sound, film, visuals, instruments, objects, costumes, and performance.  The show will also feature a brand new music and film experience  made in collaboration with director Andrew Huang and 3-D design leader Autodesk. Judge Rules Perelman Suit Against Gagosian Will Move Forward

A New York judge has ruled that the lawsuit filed by collector Ron Perelman against dealer Larry Gagosian can proceed, following Gagosian’s request that the suit be thrown out.  While rejecting several of the claims regarding breach of contract and other complaints, the court ruled that Perelman’s fraud lawsuit will be able to move forward.
