The Broad Museum Hits 820,000 Visitors in First Year

The Broad Museum has drawn over 820,000 visitors in its first year of operation, according to a report issued by the museum.  “Edye and I could not be more delighted with the public reception to the museum,” Eli Broad says of the report. “Our goal has always been to share our art with the broadest possible public, and our first year has exceeded all of our expectations.” (more…)

Cindy Sherman to Get Retrospective at Broad Museum

The Broad Museum has announced a major exhibition on Cindy Sherman, drawing heavily from the museum’s own collection of the artist’s works (Eli Broad was one of her early collectors).  The show is curated by Philipp Kaiser, formerly of LA’s Museum of Contemporary Art and a guest curator at Cologne’s Museum Ludwig. LA Times Notes Challenges to Broad Museum’s Lending Policy

A piece by Christopher Knight in the LA Times notes that the Broad Museum’s stated goal of keeping its collection circulating and on loan may be harder than it seems. “Museums are notoriously hard to define. Except for those that don’t collect at all, however, the most important activity they undertake is exhibiting a permanent collection,” he says.  “The display defines the place, giving a distinctive public profile to an otherwise faceless institution.” (more…)

Broad Museum Ticket System Overwhelmed by Demand

The Broad Museum’s online ticketing system has crashed on its first day of operation, following overwhelming traffic to the site for museum reservations.  “It isn’t that much fun to be in an overcrowded gallery,” Director Joanne Heyler had previously noted. “We’re going to watch very carefully to strike the right balance, with access for as many as we can, but not an uncomfortable experience. We want to keep artworks safe from accidental bumping that can happen when there’s overcrowding.” (more…)
