The Guggenheim’s Photo-Poetics: An Anthology, curated by Jennifer Blessing, senior photography curator at the museum, delves into methods utilized by artists to diverge from traditional notions of photography as a chronicle of tangible reality.  Such capturing of verité leaves the stage for investigation of process, material, and expression in works by ten contemporary photographers, spanning three floors at the museum’s side galleries, and guiding viewers through various sections containing selections of work by a single artist, among them Sara VanDerBeek, Erin Shirreff and Kathrin Sonntag to name a few. Elad Lassry, Russian Blue (2012), via White Cube

Transforming White Cube Gallery’s Hong Kong space into an an erratic mix of color and space, Elad Lassry has created a paradoxical challenge to viewer’s 2^nd and 3^rd dimensional perceptions.  Framed cats with piercing aquamarine eyes dot the room, gazing out at toys guarded by a luminous pink shielding. In another frame, viewers are presented with a tantalizing pair of raw steaks — the blood, emphasized by the disturbingly deep red background, but withheld from reach by its frame. Almost all the images observed in the gallery however, are flat: 2D photographs which are given depth only by the prisons they are situated in.

Image: Elad Lassry, Untitled (Presence), 2012

Elad Lassry‘s new show, Untitled (Presence), is on view at The Kitchen through October 20th. The solo exhibition includes 20 new photographs, a short run of performances featuring members of The American Ballet Theatre and The New York City Ballet, as well as a short 16 mm abstract film projected onto the wall. The exhibition was preceded by Lassry’s billboard, Women (065, 055), which appeared along the Highline Park as part of its ongoing series of work by various artists. The 25 x 75 foot-work at 18th street and 10th avenue was on view for a month until the show’s opening at the Kitchen on September 7th.
