The Central Pavilion of the Venice Biennale, via Art Observed

Spread between above the green lawns and trees of Venice’s Giardini, and the winding streets and canals of the Arsenale nearby, the Venice Biennale’s Central Pavilion has opened its doors for its Vernissage event, kicking off the 57th annual edition of the exhibition, and welcoming visitors to its first open viewings before it opens to the public this coming Saturday.   (more…)

Ernesto Neto, The Serpent’s Energy Gave Birth To Humanity (Installation View), via Art Observed

Filling the main exhibition space at Tanya Bonakdar Gallery with another of his signature, finger-crocheted structures, artist Ernesto Neto has opened a new show in New York, reprising past works with this material and technique applied towards varied explorations of the spiritual, sexual, and communal in a single architectural space.  The show, which uses the Old Testament myth of temptation and expulsion from the Garden of Eden, to extend and explore the space of the human body as metaphor for both the tale’s moral implications, and contemporary explorations of social space. A series of new drawings and sculptures by Brazilian artist Ernesto Neto (1964) are currently on view at Galerie Max Hetzler in a solo exhibition entitled notes, stones and dots.  The exhibition sees Neto exploring the forms and movements generated from the act of dancing: “If we could feel our body in a state of dance,” he says, “we might gain a better balance.”

A fan clip of M.I.A. performing Paper Planes at the Kochi-Muziris Biennale – click to watch

12/12/12 at 12:00 opened the first-ever Indian Biennial, held in the South Indian city of Kochi, Kerala, 30 kilometers from the historic Muziris islands. Twenty-three of the eighty-two showcased artists in the Biennale are native to the state, with more than forty from India. The remaining artists come from all over the world, including Ai Weiwei (China), Ernesto Neto (Brazil), Cyprien Gaillard (France), and Wangechi Mutu (Kenya) among others. Musician M.I.A., whose family is originally Sri Lankan, inaugurated the showcase with her own Indian performing debut, additionally contributing her own hologram-based artworks to be viewed throughout the exhibitions. Modeled after the Venice Biennale, Kochi-Muziris runs for three months, through March 13th, 2013. (more…)

Brazilian artist Ernesto Neto inaugurates Buenos Aires’ new art space, the Faena Art Center (which opened in September 2011), with a massive net-like installation he calls Crazy Hyperculture in the Vertigo of the World. In Neto’s installation, jewel-toned webs of crocheted ropes and fabric fill the entire Cathedral Room to create a woven bridge that welcomes visitors to explore. Neto’s vision stems from the Neo-Concreto art movement, which, according to the exhibition’s description, “places the spectator at the centre of the creative action, thereby converting physical interaction into a key aspect of his work.”

Internationally renowned Brazilian artist, Ernesto Neto, launched Festival Brazil with his exhibition “The Edges of the World” at the Hayward Gallery in the Southbank Centre. The show, which Neto has been planning for over a year, is said to be the artist’s most ambitious exhibition to date. “The Edges of the World” consists of a series of interconnected site-specific installations in the Hayward’s two main galleries and on its three sculpture terraces. The Independent called Neto’s exhibition a “dazzling playground for adults.” A visit to the show is indeed an interactive experience as viewers are encouraged to engage with their surroundings and each other.

Christian Boltanski’s “No Man’s Land” at Park Avenue Armory. Image by Art Observed.

AO was on site at the Park Avenue Armory’s second annual commission, which is showing until June 13.  This year’s installment features Christian Boltanski, in an ambitious new work that fills the 55,000 square-foot Drill Hall.  It’s called “No Man’s Land,” and it involves clothing, metal cranes, and the amplified sounds of its visitors’ beating hearts.

Variation on Color Seed Space Time Love (2009) by Ernesto Neto, via Bob van Orsouw

Currently on view at Bob van Orsouw in Zurich is Ernesto Neto‘s ‘Variations.’ Presenting his work for the second time at the gallery, in this show the artist displays his latest sculptures representing variations of biomorphic shapes. The viewer experiences these works in multi-sensory dimensions; they can enter, touch, and explore the established forms. Neto even experiments with the sense of smell in these works with different spices filling the inside of his sculptures.

From “Civilized Guilt,” a recreation of Ernesto Neto’s “Leviathan Thot” currently showing at Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nantes.

Timed to coincide with this year’s Estuaire, Musée des Beaux-Arts is currently hosting a giant work by Ernesto Neto.  “A Culpa civilizada (Civilized Guilt)” is a re-working of his well-known installation piece “Léviathan Thot,” originally shown in 2006 at the Panthéon in Paris during the Autumn Festival.  The installation will be housed in the patio space of the museum, and is curated by Blandine Chavanne and Alice Fleury, director and contemporary art coordinator of the gallery, respectively.  It will close on September 21.

Installation view of Ernesto Neto’s ‘anthropodino’ via Park Avenue Armory

The Park Avenue Armory opened its first commissioned art installation, Brazilian artist Ernesto Neto’s ‘anthropodino,’ in the Wade Thompson Drill Hall last week. The installation is made largely of Lycra tulle, sewed onto a system of skeletal wooden frames. Hanging from a large canopy are numerous bags of spices: cloves, cumin, ginger, and others. The Park Avenue Armory aims to be a public urban art space like the Tate Modern Turbine Hall in London and the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, and with its first commission has followed the trend of participatory art along the lines of Relational Aesthetics.  Though Ernesto Neto’s ‘anthropodino’ takes a more egalitarian and less academic approach to public art, with the current installation as a crowd pleaser.
