Do Ho Suh Named WSJ Art Innovator for 2013

Korean artist Do Ho Suh has been named Wall Street Journal’s Art Innovator of 2013, recognized for his challenging explorations of space and material.  The artist is interviewed in the magazine this week, talking about his recent work with graphite rubbings.  “Rubbing is a different interpretation of space. It’s quite sensuous—very physical and quite sexual,” says Suh. “You have to very carefully caress the surface and try to understand what’s there.” (more…)

Marian Goodman Gallery in Paris is currently exhibiting a new series of works by painter and illustrator Julie Mehretu. in a show which Mehretu described as a ‘self-ethnographic project,’ involving a dissection of her identity as an artist through a free abstraction of her personal creative practice. The show is Mehretu’s first solo exhibition in France.

Matthew Barney Designs Skateboard for Juxtapoz Magazine

As part of a Juxtapoz Magazine-benefit auction for the Ride It skatepark in Detroit, artist Matthew Barney has designed a special edition skateboard, tipped with a chunk of graphite. Part of Barney’s ongoing “Drawing Restraint” series, the design allows riders to literally inscribe their movements across a terrain. (more…)
