NY Times Provides Inside Look at Art Rescue

The New York Times has published an in-depth look at Brooklyn’s newly founded Cultural Recovery Center.  Comprised of a task force of 106 volunteers, this rapid response team works to salvage work in the wake of major disasters like last year’s Hurricane Sandy.  “We’re not doing any big conservation,” says studio manager Anna Studebaker. “We are a kind of MASH unit.” (more…)

MoMA PS1 Calls for Rockaway Sustainability Proposals

After announcing the construction of a performance dome in the Rockaways this spring, MoMA PS1 has taken more steps to aid in the New York neighborhood’s relief, calling for video proposals on how to create a sustainable waterfront.  Twenty-five proposals will be selected by a panel including Klaus BiesenbachNiklas Maak, and Hans Ulrich Obrist among others, and presented at the new dome in the Rockaways this April. The Kitchen Recovers from Hurricane Sandy

Longstanding New York arts institution The Kitchen is still recovering from the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy last November.  While the space was able to reopen by the end of November, the organization is still scrambling to cover the losses suffered during the storm, including damages to speakers, lighting fixtures, electronics, and the theatre stage.    (more…)

Art Insurance Claims From Hurricane Sandy at $500 million

Art insurance claim totals from Hurricane Sandy are estimated to climb to $500 million, $300 million of which are claims by the artist Peter Max. The number is much higher than initially estimated — AXA, one of the largest insurers, had initially estimated that it would pay out $40 million in losses. The total number includes damage to artwork as well as to gallery structures. (more…)

Art Fag City is tracking Hurricane Sandy’s path through Chelsea’s prime gallery district, parts of which are within flood zone A. The site reports that as of 3:50 p.m. today, the Chelsea Piers have not flooded, and the streets are generally clear.  Lower Manhattan is bracing for what could be an almost unprecedented storm surge of flood waters.
