Ida Ekblad, Proper Stuff (Installation View), via Herald St

It would be understandable to overlook the works currently on view at Herald St. in London as paintings by Norwegian artist Ida Ekblad.  The young painter and sculptor, whose work so often mines the scrawling hands of graffiti writing or mixes in cast-off detritus from her daily daily wanderings, here has taken a decidedly more contemplative route.  Over a small series of paintings, she embraces a distinct sense of foreground and backdrop, mining new ground to create a particularly compelling body of works. Currently on view at the Greene Naftali Gallery is a solo exhibition by Norwegian artist Ida Ekblad, presenting new works characterized by the combination of lyrical elements in painting, sculpture, and poetry.

ArtObserved was on hand last Wednesday, September 9, 2009 for the opening of Ida Ekblad’s ‘Salty Sap Green Black’ at The Journal Gallery in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The exhibition features a number of sculptural works collectively titled ‘The Gold Bug Drift (NYC),’ which take their title, and process, from Edgar Allen Poe’s story ‘The Gold Bug,’ in which the main character is bitten by a gold bug and goes searching for treasure. Ekblad’s sculptures are made of “gems and treasures” she found while on “drifts” throughout New York City, which are placed in vessels of concrete as they are discovered and carried around the city until completion.
