Pablo Picasso’s never before exhibited collage Portrait of a Lady will be exhibited for the first time at the Louvre Abu Dhabi.  The work was acquired last December, and will go on view next month as part of the Birth of a Museum exhibition.  “Being a collage, it’s one of the key elements that Picasso used and it’s not something that is always seen in other museums. After twelve successful years as director of the Louvre, Henri Loyrette has announced that he will be leaving his post in April. Under his leadership the museum broadened its cultural outreach.  Loyrette engaged in planning for the Louvre Abu Dhabi and opening the Islamic Galleries and raising tens of millions of euros in funds from several middle eastern countries. He established a contemporary art program with major installations and expects to nearly double the number of visitors to the museum since 2001. (more…)

Museums take part in a panel discussion to show that developments are on schedule for Abu Dhabi, as the museums’ plans have been delayed due to economic and political issues. Frank Gehry, who designed the Guggenheim there, will speak at the Abu Dhabi Art Fair (7-10 November), as will Jean Nouvel and Norman Foster, who designed the Louvre Abu Dhabi and the Zayed National Museum, respectively. The fair has western gallery exhibitors such as Lisson, Hauser & Wirth, Thaddeus Ropac and Gagosian. (more…)
