Warhol Museum Planned for New Lower East Side Development

A new development on the Lower East Side has been green lighted by city authorities, and will include a New York outpost for Pittsburgh’s Andy Warhol Museum.  Essex Crossing, a $1.1 billion development planned by L+M Development Partners, BFC Partners and Taconic Investment Partners, will include a community center, rooftop garden, as well as the 10,000 square foot space occupied by the museum. NADA New York Moves to Basketball City

The New Art Dealers Alliance will return to New York City this year for its second art fair in the city, and will look to the Basketball City sports complex in the Lower East Side to accommodate its stable of artists and exhibitors.  The event will showcase new and emerging contemporary artists and galleries, complementing the concurrent events of Frieze New York on Randall’s Island that weekend. Art Fag City describes how Lower East Side Galleries are expanding, but not as a result of an art market bubble. Reasonable rent due to the economy, bargain-hunting collectors, and the bohemian sensibility of the LES may be together be creating a sustainable market for gallerists in the area.

Finance weekly mainstay Barrons profiles the Lower East Side as an under-the-radar haunt for those seeking fresh artwork by emerging talents or bargain pieces by bigger name artists. Examples are used such as, Invisible-Exports, where “Props for Memory,” a group show featuring Joseph Beuys, provides a Beuys piece which can be bought for just $2,000. At the Stephan Stoyanov gallery, also on the Lower East Side, paintings by Jen Mazza from “The Words” exhibition sell for $3,200 each.
