Local Groups Lobby for Public Artwork Monies Legally Owed by Developers

A recent investigation has shown a number of cities across the U.S. failing to enforce a law requiring property developers to allocate a small percentage of cost for any construction project to fund public art, and many organizations are clamoring to enforce the laws.  “It’s really a question of making people aware that this law is on the books,” says Tom Chestnut of the Buffalo Arts Commission, who has pushed to enforce a related law in the Western New York city. Nick Cave Brings His Soundsuit Horses to Grand Central

Musician, artist and writer Nick Cave will bring 30 of his signature Soundsuits, intricately designed to resemble horses, to Grand Central Station this March.  The horses, which are operated by two actors, will “graze” in the main hall of the station, and will occasionally break into dance when accompanied by two harpists.  The project, titled “Heard•NY” is co-produced by Creative Time and MTA Arts for Transit. John Baldessari Partners With LA’s Arts Matter Program On LA Metro Buses

Los Angeles based-artist John Baldessari has redesigned 12 LA metro buses in partnership with the “Arts Matter” campaign for the Los Angeles Fund for Public Education.  The buses are redesigned to resembled classic school buses, with the words “Learn to Dream” and its Spanish equivalent “Aprende a soñar,” in support of public arts education.  The project aims to “start a conversation about the role of arts education and give artists a platform to address this issue,” says ForYourArt founder and project producer Bettina Korek. Shanghai’s Power Station of Art Steps on to the Global Stage

Having just opened its doors in October, the Power Station of Art in Shanghai is already making big moves as China’s first state-run contemporary art museum.  The 19th century industrial site was converted by the state into a premier public art center, and is currently hosting a massive exhibition in collaboration with the Centre Pompidou in Paris to show 119 of the Centre’s works.  “It is a prestige object for the city, to have a museum that, at least in scale, can compete with Tate Modern in London or MoMA in New York,” says Jens Hoffmann, co-curator of the Shanghai Biennale.
