Selgas Cano Unveils Design for Serpentine Summer Pavilion

The design for the Serpentine’s annual summer pavilion has been announced for 2015, a colorful, cocoon-like structure by the architectural collaborative Selgas Cano that celebrates the program’s 15th anniversary.  Selgas Cano “sought a way to allow the public to experience architecture through simple elements, [a] journey through the space, characterized by color, light and irregular shapes with surprising volumes.” (more…)

Sarah Lucas Selected for 2015 British Pavilion Exhibition in Venice

The British Pavilion at next year’s Venice Biennale will spotlight the work of Sarah Lucas, the BBC reports.  “Having consistently pushed the limits of her practice, there’s a sense that Lucas – seemingly more active than ever – is coming into her own,” says Gregor Muir, executive director of the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London, and a member of the selection committee. The White Columns Annual is open again this year, presenting a series of works centered around the title Looking Back.  This year, curator Pati Hertling has been invited to select works based on her “personal experience of looking at art in New York” over the past year.

Wolfgang Tillmans: “From Neue Welt” at Andrea Rosen Gallery, through June 22nd 2013

Continuing their ongoing relationship, Andrea Rosen Gallery is currently exhibiting its 11th solo exhibition of work by German photographer Wolfgang Tillmans, on view through June 22nd.  From Neue Welt is the result of a four-year project that Tillmans began in 2008, and completed in 2012, a vigorous photographic cataloguing of the dawn of the 21st century. 25 works have been selected from the hundreds of photographs that were a part of the original work, which culminated at the Kunsthalle Zurich in the fall of 2012.

“Empire State” Brings New York City to Rome

Curators Alex Gartenfeld and Norman Rosenthal are preparing to unveil an exhibition in Rome next month, looking at the city of New York through the framework of the capital of the ancient Roman Empire.  Titled Empire State, the show brings 25 New York artists to Rome for a show exploring the creative essence within the two iconic metropolises.  “Instead of just celebrating a city, I hope it’s an exhibition that questions what it is to be an art center today, and what sort of cultural cachet a city wields by having these art institutions. I think a lot of cities, Rome included, are thinking about what it means to be a contemporary art center. That’s where empire becomes this very relevant theme.”  Says Mr. Gartenfeld. (more…)
