Forced to Move Again, Artists Struggle to Find New Studios in Red Hook
Wednesday, March 12th, 2014A recent New York Times article traces the rising rents of the Industry City business incubator and studios, and the resulting exodus of artists a recent rent hike at the Red Hook building has caused. Red Hook is the most recent in a string of rapidly gentrifying neighborhoods, where artists are continually being driven out. “All I can see is going further out, then having to move again,” said 73-year old painter Richard Castellana. “I just can’t take it anymore.” (more…)
Damin Hirst Previews Science Gallery
Wednesday, August 21st, 2013Damien Hirst’s Science Gallery and Studios has selected a design for construction, a 9,000 square meter space in Stroud, England that will make it the largest art production site in the world. Designed by Bath-based firm Designscape, Science will feature numerous studios, spaces, and a formaldehyde room for Hirst’s famous preserved works. The building is also distinguished by its shifting, colorful facade. “The aim was to produce a wall that was intriguingly blue from one direction and green from the other,” says Designscape. “If you stand halfway down the elevation, you are not quite sure whether the building is blue or green.” (more…)
Bushwick Artists Take Active Role in Neighborhood Real Estate
Saturday, August 3rd, 2013A group of artists, led by Jules de Balincourt, are taking active measures to prevent the ongoing cycle of gentrification from driving them from their studio spaces in the North Brooklyn neighborhood of Bushwick. The rising rents in the swiftly gentrifying neighborhood has some artists pushing to take a stand before they are priced out. “Ten years ago, artists were paying $1 a square foot. Now, in some cases, it’s as much as $4,” says artist William Powhida. “We’re seeing floors subdivided into smaller and smaller spaces, and landlords are charging more and more money. Nicole Klagsbrun to Close Gallery After 30 Years in Business
Saturday, March 30th, 2013Dealer and gallerist Nicole Klagsbrun has announced that she will close her gallery after 30 years of operation, and will focus on smaller shows and artist representation.“I’m not sick and I’m not broke. I just don’t want the gallery system anymore,” Klagsbrun said. “The old school way was to be close to the artists and to the studios. Nowadays, it’s run like a corporation. After 30 years, this is not what I aspire to do. It is uninteresting.” (more…)
