Cuban artist and activist Tania Bruguera has been tapped for the most recent commission project at Tate Modern, which opened this past October during Frieze Week. Tania Bruguera to Stage “Referendum” Work in New York Around Immigration Policy

Artist Tania Bruguera will stage her work Referendum in Union Square this coming March, offering New Yorkers a public forum to voice their opinion on U.S. immigration policy.  “It’s a very personal interaction,” says Sara Reisman, artistic director at the Shelley and Donald Rubin Foundation “She’s trying to gauge people’s opinions… she’ll probably do some advocating.” (more…)

Hugo Boss Prize Shortlist Announced

The shortlist for the 2016 Hugo Boss Prize has been announced, with Tania Bruguera, Mark Leckey, Ralph Lemon, Laura Owens, Wael Shawky and Anicka Yi making the list of honorees.  The winner announcement and ceremony will take place in October of 2016, and will give the winning artist an exhibition at the Guggenheim. Tania Bruguera Interviewed as She Takes Up Post at Yale

Tania Bruguera is profiled in both The Guardian and The Art Newspaper today, as she begins her post as a teacher at Yale University, and reflects on her turbulent past year.  “In Cuba we’ve been in two dictatorships after the other,” she tells the Guardian. “A lot of people don’t see it that way yet, and for me it’s hard, still, to say those words. People have been under fear. We need a process where people understand not only what their rights are, but what to ask for.” (more…)

Tania Bruguera Returns to United States

Tania Bruguera has returned to the United States, following 8 months of detainment in Cuba for her protest work, Tatlin’s Whisper #6.  The artist’s arrest for the work had evoked fears that she may be placed in detention for “disturbing the public order.”
