The hustle and bustle of the spring art season has fallen over New York, and the anticipation is building for this year’s edition of Frieze New York, set to open its doors in just a few days at its annual haunt at Randall’s Island.  This year, as the fair reaches its seventh edition, some adjustments and tweaks to the schedule will look to expand the fair’s offerings and appeal in an increasingly crowded circuit. Following the success of The European Fine Arts Fair’s (TEFAF) inaugural fair in October 2016, TEFAF New York debuts its sophomore fair dedicated to fine art, antiques, and design on May 4th at the Park Avenue Armory, with a particular focus on more contemporary pieces and artists. TEFAF New York Spring has its origins in Maastricht, Netherlands and was born out of exhibitors’ desire for the fair, which meticulously vets its artwork, to expand into the vibrant New York art world. Since 2016, TEFAF New York and Artvest have worked together in order to curate a fall and a spring show at the Park Avenue Armory. (more…)

Notable Number of Museums at This Year’s TEFAF

Initial reports on this year’s TEFAF Maastricht art fair are indicating a high number of museums looking to buy at this year’s edition.  Filled with over $5 billion in art and antiques, the fair is luring a number of museums looking to further bolster their collections.  “Museum board members have realized that this fair is a real opportunity that has to be seized,” Says New York Dealer Richard L. TEFAF in Talks with Sotheby’s for Art Event in China

TEFAF is currently in talks with Sotheby’s and Beijing GeHua Group (China’s state-owned development company) over a new art fair in China.  “TEFAF Beijing 2014” would place a new edition of the world’s largest art and antiques fair  in the world’s second-largest art market.  “We feel now is the time to further develop our presence in China, one of the most important art markets,” said TEFAF Executive Ben Janssens. “Tefaf is committed to contributing to the further growth of the market for European art in China.” (more…)

$14 Million Velazquez for Sale at TEFAF

The European Fine Art Fair, which opened its doors to VIP buyers today in the Netherlands, is offering over $5.2 billion in museum-quality artwork and antiques this year, including a “reasonable” $14 million painting by Velzaquez.  “Collectors, or more generally rich people, will continue to buy what the market considers are the best pieces,” says art adviser Henry Bounameaux. “At fairs like Tefaf, they feel secure.” (more…)
