Yorkshire Sculpture Park Named Britain’s “Museum of the Year”

The Yorkshire Sculpture Park has earned Britain’s prestigious Art Fund Museum of the Year award, earning a £100,000 prize and a reputation as one of the country’s best art spaces.  “A perfect fusion of art and landscape, the Yorkshire Sculpture Park has gone from a modest beginning to one of the finest outdoor museums one might ever imagine,” says Stephen Deuchar, director of the Art Fund and panel chair for the award. UK Court Ruling Opens Door for New Tax Status on Works of Art

A UK tax judgement this week has challenged the taxation of art works in the country, allowing Portrait of Omai by Sir Joshua Reynolds to be taxed as a “wasting asset,” thereby avoiding capital gains tax.  The painting had hung in North Yorkshire’s Castle Howard for over two hundred years, and was recently sold by owned Simon Howard, who claims the work contributed to the appeal of the castle for tourists.  “The case could give vendors savings of 28 per cent on the sale of works of art that fulfil the same criteria,” said art agent Robert Holden. City of Yorkshire Launches Initiative to Bolster Sculptural Heritage

In a bid to become a global destination for art lovers, the British city of Yorkshire has created the Yorkshire Sculpture Triangle, a coalition of galleries and institutes dedicated primarily to the art of sculpture.  The Triangle includes the Henry Moore Institute, Leeds Art Gallery, Yorkshire Sculpture Park, and The Hepworth Wakefield, and showcases a variety of both classic works and new pieces from around the world.   “I’m delighted that we can support a project that will attract further investment and visitors to Yorkshire. It is a great example of how partnership-working can help more people to become more familiar with Yorkshire’s pre-eminence in modern sculpture.”  Says Cluny Macpherson, director of the Yorkshire Region of the Arts Council. David Hockney – A Closer Winter Tunnel, February–March (2006), Guggenheim Bilbao

British painter David Hockney has, over the course of his 50 year career, continually pushed the conceptions of landscape painting, exploring various approaches to form, color and composition that mirror his ongoing fascination with shifting technologies and cultural perception. Now, his work is being shown at the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao as the second venue of a major exhibition of the Yorkshire native’s work, including a large collection of works done in his home town.
