Carter, 1942, 1955, 1977, 2009, Portrait of a thoughtful abstraction with arranged interior and Modern Sculpture via Salon 94
Currently showing at Salon 94 Freemans in New York are works by Carter. The paintings presented are new and his largest to date. Also included is a sculptural ensemble comprised of a life-sized black portrait bust, garments designed by Carter and candles. Titled “And Within Area Although”, it is Carter’s second solo show at Salon 94 Freemans following his 2007 debut. The paintings featured although abstract in their concept, utilize recognizable forms and patterns. “And Within Area Although” runs through October 24, 2009.

Carter’s paintings presented at Salon 94 Freemans are comprised by brushstrokes and ink drawings layered on digitally altered and collaged photographs. Images dating back to and depicting interiors of 1940s and 50s serve simultaneously as part of Carter’s work and as imaginary spaces that house Carter’s work. With use of an array of art-historical references, Carter, allows his work to be in a sense disseminated, yet solid. Transcending the mere realm of influence, Pop-art, Art-Deco, Abstract Expressionism, modernist and Ancient Greek and Roman sculpture and busts are all actually incorporated within Carter’s work. The recognizable forms and patterns, tease the viewer, as they stay anonymous in their multitude of suggestions.

Born in 1970 in CT, Carter lives and works in New York. He received a bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Maryland Institute College of Art, and MFA from University of California. Carter is represented by Yvon Lambert in Paris, Salon 94 in New York, Hotel Gallery in London and Jack Hanley Gallery in San Francisco. His work was featured in 2006 Whitney Biennial and in Museum of Modern Art in New York.
