The Pace Gallery opens its new London flagship gallery on Thursday, October 4th at No. 6 Burlington Gardens in the Royal Academy building. On view will be an exhibition of the work of Mark Rothko and Hiroshi Sugimoto entitled Rothko/Sugimoto: Dark Paintings and Seascapes. It will be the first private gallery exhibition of Rothko’s work in London in nearly fifty years.

Pace London will be located in the west wing of the Royal Academy building, directly north of the Royal Academy of Art’s Burlington House. Pace has hired architect and Royal Academician Sir David Chipperfield to complete renovations. The new location is being spearheaded by Mollie Dent-Brocklehurst, who will also continue to lead the gallery’s other London location at 6-10 Lexington Street in Soho.

The London gallery is the seventh worldwide location, with four in New York (it just inaugurated a new space on 25th Street in Chelsea last week), two in London and one in Bejing.

According to the gallery’s press release, the exhibition “juxtaposes Mark Rothko’s late black and grey paintings with Hiroshi Sugimoto’s contemporary photographs of bodies of water, exploring the visual and philosophical affinities between the two” and “extends Pace’s five-decade tradition of exhibitions that initiate dialogues between artists working across time periods, geography, and mediums.”
