Initially launched in 2002 by Zélika GarcÃa, the fair soon relocated from Monterrey to Centro Citibanamex in Mexico City where it holds four events annually. The fair hosted a wide range of artists and galleries, including Gabriel Orozco, Wilfredo Prieto and Dr. Lakra at Kurimanzutto, Simon Fujiwara at Galeria OMR and Martin Lanezan at Bianca Boeckel Galeria. The fair further included works by artists represented by notable galleries such as Alma Allen at Kasmin Gallery, Jose Dávila at Sean Kelly, and Marco Aviña at House of Gaga. At the Material Art Fair, the lineup included Alejandro Garcia Contreras at Swivel Gallery, Omar Mendoza at Steve Turner, and Yvette Mayorga at Ceramica Suro, showcasing an array of contemporary art practices and themes. Of special note and coinciding with Mexico City’s art week, Wyatt Kahn’s solo exhibition ‘Fantasmas’ opened at the Museo Diego Rivera Anahuacalli, allowing visitors to experience his sculptural paintings inspired by everyday objects against the backdrop of the museum’s extensive collection of pre-Hispanic artifacts.

The 2024 edition introduced “Formas,” a segment designed to showcase historical or site-specific projects by well-established galleries. The inclusion of “Formas” complements ZONAMACO’s program of activities, which encompasses talks, editorial presentations, exhibition openings, and other events throughout Mexico City, offering a platform for both national and international panelists to explore contemporary art practices.

Reaching its 20-year milestone, ZONAMACO’s 2024 edition highlighted the fair’s role in the art world, serving not only as a marketplace for art but also as a cultural event that brings together artists, galleries, collectors, and art enthusiasts from across the globe. Over time, the fair and the local scene have evolved in tandem with the country’s collector base, which helps foster dialogue within the Latin American art scene. This year, the fair granted an unprecedented $100,000 prize to the artist and exhibitor who received the most votes from visitors. “I am proud of doing something for my city and granting local and foreign galleries a platform next to strengthening the local collector base,†GarcÃa says in The Art Newspaper.
