“This starting point is at a meeting of cultures and worlds,” shared artist Leiko Ikemura during her London debut at Lisson Gallery earlier this month. Her work feels like an invitation to pause and contemplate what cross-cultural connection means today. With a dreamlike palette—as in Girl in Yellow (2021)—Ikemura draws us to linger, her smudged, joyful tones quietly captivating. Sculptures like Usagi Kannon Pray (168), a life-sized bronze merging rabbit ears with a human face, encapsulate her philosophy of interconnectedness, with something deep and ancient lying just beneath the surface. From early exhibitions in South Korea to discoveries in the northern English landscapes of Norfolk, Ikemura captures a vision both cosmic and grounded, harmonising Eastern and Western influences through universally resonant art. This winter, Lisson Gallery brings her invitation across the Atlantic, offering New York a chance to linger in Ikemura’s soft, spirit-filled gaze.
