‘As She Is,’ Curated by Rejina Pyo: An Open Love Letter to the women who’ve lit her creative spark

November 5th, 2024

Rejina Pyo’s latest exhibition ‘As She Is’ at Soho Revue is an open love letter to the women who’ve lit the creative spark in her over the last decade. “The starting point was a desire to celebrate, in a more direct way, the many artists who have inspired my work,” Pyo reveals, and what a celebration it is—an ambitious, multi-artist showcase filled with punchy statements on femininity, identity, and the often-tangled web of societal roles that fashion and the arts explore through their own, complimentary lenses.

Eighteen artists, spanning Nigeria to the Peak District, alongside Pyo’s deeply personal Mother’s Objects, have transformed the gallery into a layered exploration of the female gaze. Each work, from Lyson Marchessault’s emotionally charged consideration of the Virgin Mary in Mother (2023) to Eileen Cooper’s defiant Personal Space (2019), feels like a nudge to stop, think, and recalibrate how we experience the world and own our vulnerability.

Pyo’s selection of female trailblazers—many kept in her back pocket for over fifteen years—shows not only her curatorial sharpness but a keen awareness of the untold stories that art brings to the fore. It’s a rallying cry for those who’ve shone through adversity, united by a common thread of resilience and creativity. As viewers, we’re invited to look, linger, and leave a little wiser.
